Omonia Square

Omonia has been a central spoke of the city’s spatial planning since the very first designs laid out the capital of modern Greece in the 19th century.

When was it built

Omonia’s redesigned ‘square’ was unveiled in May 2020 and restored the iconic fountain, now with 188 jets and 177 underwater spotlights built with eco-friendly materials and cool pavement technologies.

What's the story

One point of the triangle that forms the city centre. The nexus of Athinas, Stadiou, Panepistimiou, 3is Septemvriou, and Agiou Konstantinou Streets. Indeed, the city’s planners had proposed building the royal palace on this prime site.

Why it's important

It’s not just a traffic thoroughfare but a social one too: the symbol of the modern city, where migrants from the provinces arrived and football fans celebrate their team’s championship victory.

Fun fact

Omonia is Greek for harmony, a moniker reflecting the informal political truce declared here in 1862 by the leaders of rival political parties in the wake of King Otto’s ousting.
